Combining ergonomics, reliability and aesthetics in a very competitively priced package, Swident’s Friend Easy has all the makings of a BFF

By Danny Chan

The dental unit has been an indispensable tool of a dentist’s trade since the dawn of the teeth-fixing profession. Gone are the days when dental patients received treatment in modified versions of barber chairs. Today’s dental units come in an assortment of colours, constructions and configurations. Amazingly, an ever-growing dental armamentarium has done nothing to diminish the central role played by the dentist’s chair, whether as the surgery’s centrepiece equipment or in the daily functions of the practice. To say that the dental unit is a dentist’s ‘best friend’ is hardly an exaggeration.

Just like a friend, choosing a dental unit comes down to a personal choice. There is no one-size-fits-all chair, which explains why dentists still agonise over chair selection in a seemingly saturated dental unit market. Still, every now and then, you come across a dental chair that strives to serve a broader market – offering more ‘friendship benefits’ than what the price tag suggests.

Swident’s Friend Easy is the aptly named treatment unit that combines the key attributes of ergonomics, reliability and aesthetics in a very competitively priced package. In other words, it has all the makings of a BFF.

If a Europhile lurks inside of you, you’d be pleased to know that the Swident chair boasts Swiss Precision and Italian Design. Swident is a manufacturer and designer of innovative products that are durable and easy to maintain.

Dr Peter Wilkinson, Owner of Wilkinson Orthodontics, is someone that found all the attributes he wanted in a Swident chair. Last year, the Specialist Orthodontist celebrated 15 years of establishing his Gold Coast practice that offers traditional outside braces, Incognito lingual braces and Invisalign.

Operating out of two purpose-built practices – one located on Ashmore Rd in Benowa and the other on Discovery Drive in Helensvale – Wilkinson Orthodontics has grown from a team of four to its current strength of 22.

Opened in October 2019, the Helensvale Practice is a double-storey, 450-sqm Specialist Clinic with five clinical chairs located on the lower level and two consultation rooms upstairs as well as an onsite dental laboratory. Having an onsite and dedicated orthodontic lab technician allows the practice to offer custom-made appliances and the ability to make immediate onsite adjustments as needed throughout treatment.

The Gold Coast practice purchased their first Swident Friend Easy chair from Ampac Dental in 2018 before moving to the Helensvale location. They installed another two Swident Friend Continental delivery system chairs the following year after the new building had opened.

Dr Wilkinson’s reasons for making both purchases boil down to the unit’s user-friendliness and straightforward functions:

“Due to our clinic being open, we needed a compact chair that was aesthetically pleasing since they are always on show. Functionally the chairs are simple to use and, according to our dental maintenance technician, parts can be easily sourced.”

Whether you choose the Traditional or Continental delivery system, the Swident unit comes equipped with a well-balanced arm that provides smooth manoeuvrability. The operator has access to a control panel with four distinct user programs that manages all of the unit’s functions.

The dentist table on the Swident Friend Easy is equipped with Luzzani triplex syringe; one high-speed fibre optic line, one low speed line and space to accommodate a scaler. An optional second fibre optic line can be configured. The unit also comes with: Faro LED dental light (optional wall or ceiling mounted lights are available); pneumatic foot control that allows progressive regulation of the micro motor as well as spray and chip blower.

Regarding patient comfort, Dr Wilkinson compliments the ergonomic design: “The patient headrest easily adjusts and supports the neck. It is easy to adjust the lay down position and program this into the touch pad.”

To fit into his open-planned clinic, Dr Wilkinson wanted a chair that has a small footprint and "wasn’t bulky”.

"The Swident chair ticks this box as well as being aesthetically pleasing," he attests.

The smaller price tag of the Friend Easy was also a decisive factor, says the Orthodontist:

“Initially price played a large factor in the process. In Orthodontics we don’t require a lot of the features available on most dental units. Ampac dental were able to customise our order and provide us with a dental delivery system that suits our requirements at a competitive price.”

The Gold Coast Orthodontist says the purchase decision was helped by Ampac’s “exceptional customer service and support” from the outset.

“Their product knowledge and punctuality in communicating from enquiry to installation has been excellent. They tailored a package to suit our needs with no aggressive sales pitch – they really put us first as customers.”

Dr Wilkinson’s satisfaction with the Swident chairs and Ampac’s service is instinctively conveyed by his consideration to replace the practice’s existing chairs with new Swident units in the future – when the former units have reached the end of their lifespan. Sounds like another dentist has made a new best friend.

Alcaston Dental Care | Levitch Design Australia
How do you preserve the stately charms of a bygone era while rejuvenating the look and feel of a modern practice? That was the challenge that Levitch Design Australia (LDA) faced in the revamp of Alcaston Dental Care.

By Danny Chan

Nestled within a heritage-listed property on 2 Collins Street, one of Melbourne CBD’s main arteries, the clinic is surrounded by 1930s architecture that holds historical significance to the State of Victoria. Dr Gitika Sanghvi, Owner and Principal Dentist of Alcaston Dental Care, wanted to preserve the period character within her own practice design while refreshing the staid interiors.

The dentist started working at ADC in 2014 when she bought into the practice as an associate. Having bought the rest of the practice in 2018, Dr Sanghvi felt a physical facelift was overdue last year. She picked LDA, a healthcare fitout specialist, based on good word of mouth and positive vibes following initial face meetings.

“We needed a revamp as the practice hadn’t really been renovated much in the past. I wanted to keep the warm, welcoming feel of our practice as well as highlight the period and art deco features. Many of our patients have been coming to this practice for a very long time, so it was important for the practice to still have the same welcoming feel as before.”

“I was a little worried that after the refurbishment, the practice might feel too clinical and impersonal.  In terms of clinical workflow, I really wanted the steri to be a self-contained space. I also wanted to future proof the clinic so that I had options to add more tech in the long term.”

In summary, the goal was to create a space where the old meets the new in a tasteful and welcoming environment – without compromising on practical function, patient comfort or that sense of familiarity.

Looking at the interiors, it’s not hard to appreciate how Levitch Design Australia has seamlessly integrated all these elements. The revamped 100-sqm space is an exquisitely presented clinic in which millennial hipsters and art deco lovers can happily co-exist.

The warmth and familiarity of the beloved family practice is lovingly preserved, along with tasteful reminders of the building’s rich tradition and heritage. The contemporary feel is brought out by the minimalist decor, bright airy spaces and snazzy equipment – such as the slim flip-out overhead screens inside the surgeries. The elemental balance of tradition and modernity is evident throughout the clinic.

In one of the surgeries, an old fireplace has been closed up and repurposed into an elegant mantelpiece that blends flawlessly with the bespoke cabinetry. Its classical look offers a unique twist to a room geared and wired for clinical expedience. Over at the waiting room, a large format photograph of gleaming skyscrapers is juxtaposed with old-glam furnishings – blue velvety chairs with gold-coloured legs and gold-framed glass displays.

With the help of an Instagram picture, Dr Sanghvi had showed the Levitch designers a particular shade of blue that she wanted for the cabinets. What resulted from that input is probably the most prominent facet of the entire design.

Indeed, one of the first things you’ll notice are these dark navy blue cabinets with shiny rounded gold handles. Paired with glossy white counter tops, the fetching hues and quaint design of the cabinets evoke a timeless quality without that chintzy look. They effectively break the monotony of the white walls and furnishings with subdued yet posh elegance.

The overall environment is cosy and tranquil owing to a blend of natural light and warm down-lights. Thanks to character-filled cabinets and a grand reception counter that harks back to a glitzier time, the clinic possesses a somewhat offbeat personality that works a treat for jaded eyes.

“We are just really happy with the complete outcome. Personally, I am in love with the colours and lighting that we have in our practice,” Dr Sanghvi gushes. “The lighting features have added something different and the handles on our cabinets are amazing. (LDA) really stuck to the period of the building and made sure that everything tied in.”

In terms of patient and operator comfort, the dentist reports equally positive feedback:

“Our patients love the space and always comment on how beautiful and relaxing it feels. Our staff love the amount of storage we’ve managed to fit into the practice, and the size of our sterilisation room now. Brooke is super happy with her new desk at reception and how much space she has to work in now.”

The general practitioner has full praise for the Levitch team that made the transformation possible while highlighting several key personnel: Interior Designer Kay; Project Manager Carl; Project Consultant Ben; Project Manager Michael; and even the tradespeople who were “really lovely and accommodating to our requests”.

“Everyone tried their best to make sure that we were functional as soon as possible. They were good about completing details before and after business hours so not as to disturb us and our patients,” Dr Sanghvi enthuses.

“Speed and turnaround was good – they did as much as they could to fit into our timeline. Cost wise, it ended up costing as much as I thought it would.”

Reiterating the importance of maintaining a familiar atmosphere to which the clinic’s loyal patients would feel belonged, the dentist is pleased with the way the designers kept her clued in throughout the process – updating her with images and colour samples so that there were no surprises. The same level of efficiency and work ethic, she attests, was also evident throughout the construction process. The grateful dentist takes the opportunity to individually acknowledge the Levitch team members:

“Thank you to Ben, Carl, Kay, Michael and the team at Levitch.”

Astral Fedesa | ICONA Pty Ltd
Astral Fedesa | ICONA Pty Ltd
By keeping it real with customers, ICONA believes their “thoroughbred” dental equipment will soon catch on

By Danny Chan

When you buy new dental equipment, are you looking for a piece of hardware that has specific features, good value-for-money, a certain look factor or reputable brand? While these provide a great place to start your research, other longer-term factors include interoperability, future upgradeable options, after-sales support, build quality and spare parts availability.

Interestingly, your product research is not dissimilar to due diligence undertaken by an equipment dealer scouting for new brands and products to represent in their local market. In fact, some like ICONA Pty Ltd take pride in having a meticulous curating process – bringing to market products with qualities that they believe can enhance the Australian practice.

Unlike the “supermarket” class of equipment dealers, ICONA carries a narrower band of product lines, therefore do not have the luxury to ‘test’ market sentiments or chop and change products that don’t pan out.

Having less wiggle room, however, means that ICONA is very choosy about which products they represent from the outset. Using horse racing analogy, ICONA’s Managing Director Richard Tankersley, says the company is focused on grooming “one to three thoroughbreds that we know – and can support – well.”

Their ‘less is more’ product-centric focus extends across giving suppliers the due diligence that they expect from ICONA; to being focussed on the IP of that product; to their sales team becoming “absolute specialists of the product” – not least manifested through their support of product users.

ICONA’s carefully sourced thoroughbreds include a familiar name – Midmark (USA) – as well as big European brands like Fedesa (Spain) and Airel (France). Although still relatively unknown in Australia, Fedesa is the sixth largest manufacturer of dental chairs in the world.

Besides sleek European designs, Australian dentists checking out ICONA’s dental chairs for the first time may be exposed to noteworthy features that are: Not widely available; typically available in higher-end units; or entirely original.

The Fedesa Astral is a flexible dental unit package that can be customised to fit your needs – offering continental or conventional delivery, or a delivery cart. Boasting German Hanning Electro-mechanical motors, the smooth chair movements offer easy and quiet switching between three memorised positions as set by operator, in addition to three default positions.

The Airel PE8 dental chair features a balanced instruments arm that may be easily reconfigured to support left or right-handed dentistry, both positions providing easy operator and patient access to instruments. Allowing for two/four-handed treatment procedures, the Airel K2 is a compact treatment unit that belies its robust framework and seamless ergonomics, including a non-return articulated arm with long hoses to work in any position.

Both French units feature what appears to be original design elements: Triple articulated headrest that with a single button, locks in position to support the patient’s head at multiple angles, including a convenient side-facing position as well as the option of a ceiling mounted delivery system.

That some of these brands do not resonate at home is not a major concern, Richard says, as word gets around pretty quickly, and he believes Australian dentists are savvy enough to spot a good deal.

“It only takes customers who are adventurous enough to give “new” brands a try and that’s how we will continue to attract and grow a community of Australian followers,” he enthuses.

An example of an adventurous buyer without prior knowledge of the chairs is that of Carnegie Dental Group, a practice located on Princes Highway in Melbourne. After paying a visit to ICONA’s Clayton showroom, the dentists were surprised at the excellent build quality, bundled features and reasonable price point of the Fedesa Astral chair and purchased a unit on the spot. Following up on the client months afterwards, ICONA sales rep Jessica Shehata, was told the dentists have been so enthusiastic about the new chair, they were “fighting over” who gets to use the room.

Another buyer is Bill Oberdan from Max Oral Surgery, based in South Australia, who flew in to visit the Melbourne showroom. Within about 15 minutes of seeing how the Airel PE8 chairs worked, he was convinced enough to buy two units.

“These kinds of testimonials,” says Roy Conyers, ICONA’s General Manager, “are critical for us because it tells us that you can’t go past a good product. Once the word spreads, more buyers naturally follow. There’s no need for hard sell.”

Adding that the Fedesa Electra with its kneebreak design is a great option for surgeries and mobile dental vans, Roy says that, once again, two Electra units were recently purchased by a Queensland surgery purely through word of mouth recommendation.

ICONA’s reputation as a reliable Australian supplier was initially forged as Midmark’s sole regional agent, facilitating the American manufacturer’s market presence and technical support through its establishment of a nation-wide distribution network. ICONA has secured a partnership with Medical Equipment Services (MES) to supply its extensive tech support expertise in the Victoria region, in addition to about 15 key resellers scattered throughout the country.

Beginning as Midmark agent and now having entered the next phase with European representation, the one thing that sets ICONA apart, Richard asserts, is having an impactful corporate culture centred on building open and honest relationships.

This positive culture permeates every facet of ICONA’s business: Upstream to their overseas manufacturers; midstream between the company’s management and staff; and downstream through distributors to dentists and their patients.

The same way ICONA products are promoted through positive word of mouth, Roy says the grapevine is used to relay the dentist’s perspectives on ICONA’s customer service and after-sales support.

“We take a long-term view of all our relationships because they are geared towards establishing trust and stability,” Roy adds. “It’s important to us that our customers feel well supported throughout their equipment ownership – and hopefully think of us when the time comes for them to upgrade.”

“We’re in the equipment business where our customers only change or upgrade their products in 7, 15 or 20 years,” Richard interjects, “The open and transparent relationships that we have established with manufacturers, distributors and customers testify to our corporate DNA.”

“Everyone that we work with knows that ICONA is committed to support and assist them for the long haul.”

Levitch Design Australia captures client’s vision almost to the letter – but not before delivering extra oomph!

By Danny Chan

So you just want to update your existing practice using the so-called “modern” template: Light-filled environment, white walls, high gloss melamine cabinets, timber flooring, etc. In other words, the standard “run-of-mill” package contractors pull out as soon as the words “budget constraint” are uttered.

If you’re currently on this generic track, chances are, you would have one of two reactions to this featured renovation: Either dismiss it as being too “pie in the sky” to be of any practical use”, or more likely, be inspired to take a walk on the wildly creative side. A far less likely response is to be indifferent or unimpressed.

From the chiselled charms of the building facade to the cavernous interiors where stylised timber-carpet floorings, fabric walls and bespoke furnishings conjugate in a heady mix of oddly complementary colours, here is the kind of fit out splendour that once beheld cannot be unseen.

The interior design and renovation of Chisholm Orthodontics’ North Adelaide branch – other locations in Mildura, Alice Springs and South Plympton have since opened in quick succession – bears all the creative hallmarks of Levitch Design Australia. With more than 30 years under her belt, designing some of Australia’s most stunning healthcare practices, LDA has developed an inimitable sense of style, evident not just in their cutting edge design but also in bringing the client’s vision to fruition – usually with elements of surprise and aplomb.

Reflecting on Dr Neena Chisholm’s initial brief, we know that one of the main priorities the Specialist Orthodontist had was for the design to convey a “bright, cheery and energetic outlook” within “a relaxing haven for patients and their parents”.

“Our aim,” says the Practice Owner and Specialist Orthodontist, “was to have an easy flow of patients within the four surgeries.”

Interestingly, if you were asked to describe the renovation without any prior knowledge of the brief, you may actually end up using the exact words “bright, cheery and energetic” – or their variants – to capture the essence of the design aesthetics. Such is the close attention LDA pays to a client’s wants, always remaining faithful to the original vision even as it raises the artistic quotient.

Perhaps most clearly depicted in the grand reception cum waiting area, you slowly realise that the colours, fabric patterns and layered flooring were not selected in a vacuum. The tones and hues masterfully feed off each other to create an ensemble effect. Bright colours, for example, look more vibrant when paired with subdued colours, but neither ever crossing into gaudy territory. Each of the hues carefully calibrated to harmonise in a soothing way, yet somehow capturing the desired pizazz.

The palette and pattern choices, not too loud or ostentatious, were necessary to reflect characteristics of a “relaxing haven”. The different tones of fabric walls imbue the element of “softness”, just as the contoured lines of a snaking cushioned bench convey “roundness”. Over at the playroom, lampshades made from cotton-like material, resembling floating clouds, add a layer of wonderment to the kid’s area.

These are all powerful visceral touchstones that depict an environment that is “bright”, “energetic”, “comfortable”, “relaxing”, “fun” and “creative”. Once again, LDA stayed true to the aesthetic goals without straying from the brief.

In terms of layout and space optimisation, LDA had the benefit of a generous 350-sqm floor space. While apportioning the space into 4 surgeries, x-ray room and on-site laboratory, the layout artist made sure to leave room for a spacious walkway that does not simply connect to the different rooms, but dressed to impress even the most jaded customer.

Imagine a corridor wide enough to fit dual lanes of human traffic, packing enough aesthetic features to maintain visual interest throughout. On one side, each available wall panel has been turned into a giant display featuring concentric circles borrowed from the practice logo.  On the other side, framed abstract art pieces featuring a bold mix of ink scratches and splotches, reimagine the same circular motif. To complete the avant-garde experience, dangling from high ceilings are modish lights that resemble futuristic drones with light-tipped propeller blades. So eye-catching are these “flying objects” that few travellers along this pathway can resist the temptation to look skywards.

Interesting as the alley artworks are, however, they do not distract from Dr Chisholm’s master plan to provide “an easy flow of patients within the four surgeries”, which the designer more than manages – of course, not forgetting the usual aplomb.

Although the orthodontist acknowledges that LDA’s undeniably premium service and delivery is reflected in their marginally higher costs, she would still absolutely recommend their services “any day”. If that does not say customer satisfaction, what does?

Perhaps you may insist that patient feedback is the true litmus test of a quality renovation. Well then, let’s complete this string of pearls with some positive feedback that Dr Chisholm is happy to summarise:

“We have had a lot of positive feedback about the design of the building, on how good the lighting is and how nice the bright colours are in the dental practice as it makes them feel calm. The staff love the practicality of the practice and how everything just works and flows.”

“As usual (LDA) has delivered an excellent, pleasant practice environment, we enjoy coming to work.”

Back To The Future

Echoes of old industrial hub permeate the fit out design of this Specialist Periodontics clinic

By Danny Chan

When Drs Kate Burgess and Nicholas Boardman decided to turn a 40s-era building – last refurbished in the 80s but still fraught with structural issues – into a sleek modern Specialist Clinic, they knew nothing less than an experienced healthcare design and fit out team would be up to the task.

Based on strong recommendations by several other Specialist Periodontists in Victoria who had used their services for their own practice builds, the pair selected Levitch Design Australia. As well as having good track record for quality work and fast turnaround, LDA’s wealth of experience in dental-specific renovations weighed in their favour.

“We employed their services because they provide a complete design-and-build package. This enabled us to continue working full time without having to be onsite,” Dr Burgess affirms.

Citing cautionary tales of delayed building projects (by up to 12 months) due to late council approvals, the Periodontists were grateful for LDA fast tracking the process:

“(The Levitch team) had extensive knowledge as to what was required to comply with council regulations and permits in order to streamline this side of the process. We found that they made the council approval process simple and easy for us to understand and it was very efficient and quick.”

Levitch’s ability to flesh out the client’s design aspirations didn’t go unnoticed either. For the clinic’s look and feel, Nick and Kate wanted to incorporate design elements that retain a piece of the location’s rich history in industrial building and manufacturing. At the same time, they wanted to create a soothing environment (not too clinical or intimidating) in which nervous and phobic patients would feel relaxed.

Located in Newport, Victoria, Perio One offers Specialist Periodontics and Dental Implant services in a modern, light-filled environment. What makes the contemporary design of the newly renovated surgery stand out is the studied merger of art and ambience.

The physical translation of ideas becomes apparent even as you approach the front desk. A wall of avant-garde artwork and matching displays take centre stage in an otherwise laid-back reception area. Chalkboard grey back walls teamed with birch timber planks in the foreground – doubling as the counter’s cladding strips as well as display rack shelves – cleverly simulate a cafe-like environment.

Basking under soft lights in a designer chair, you notice something different about this clinic. A design motif here, a rustic magazine rack there and soon enough, the concomitant track of ideas starts to take shape. Indeed, an industrial theme paying homage to the region’s landmarks – including Newport workshop (that built the first train carriages in the 1880s); Newport Lakes; Williamstown docks, etc. – runs through the 125-sqm, two-chair surgery.

Hanging proudly on the walls are original early-1900s photos capturing the Newport workshop in its locomotive heyday. The whimsical decor continues artful depictions of the Williamstown docks and the Bluestone Quarry, the original name before it became known as Newport Lakes. Of the photographic displays, the most awe-inspiring has to be the giant picture frames along the corridor. For size reference, let’s just say that each blown-up photograph – of train buildings, locomotives and power plants – takes up an entire wall panel! As the perfect foil to character-filled walls, concrete-like floor vinyls decidedly notch up the industrial aesthetics.

More than just nostalgia, Kate explains the rationale behind the theme: “A significant proportion of our patients are older, many having lived their whole lives in the area. They have seen the area change from working class docks and railway manufacturing hub to the multicultural area it is now.”

“This is our way of acknowledging the contributions of the region’s senior generation and retaining a bit of history.”

While evoking sentimental memories, Kate, Nick and LDA did not neglect to bring out the modern and efficient traits of Perio One.

The clinic also has a sizeable following of young families. The sleek cafe-style decor, Kate reveals, is targeted at this urbanised demographic.

“Although the area has an older population, in recent years younger families have been moving in due to the convenience of Newport's position,” Kate explains, “Patients often comment on the reception experience. The idea of having a cafe style feel fits well in the small shopping strip in which we are situated and certainly helps to put the patient at ease.”

In terms of balancing ambience and workflow, Levitch’s well-conceived layout bears out the exacting nature of dental-oriented renovations. The use of frosted glass enabling a light-filled environment, not only sets the alfresco mood at the front “cafe” counter, it greatly reduces the claustrophobic fears of some nervous patients. Similarly the surgery rooms come across as airy and inviting spaces, thanks to frosted glass doors and windows that let in the natural light without compromising privacy.

Walking through this modern and spacious clinic, notwithstanding aesthetically pleasing hints of the past, it’s hard to imagine that this WW2-era skeletal construction once housed a solid-brick barbershop and rickety weatherboard extensions. The total facelift is as astounding as it was challenging.

Due to poorly planned, tacked-on renovations over the years that masked rather than solve construction inconsistencies, the original building had issues with irregular floor heights and subsidence of a shared wall. Ever the solution provider, the Levitch builders erected an entirely new foundation and supporting wall before converting the space into the rectangular-shaped building it is now. This space overhaul decidedly frees up the imagination of the interior designer, who then worked on breathing life into the bare bone structure.

Considering the scope of their involvement, it is remarkable that actual build phase took just 12 weeks. Crediting the fast turnaround to Levitch’s excellent work rate and ethics, Dr Boardman praises:

“Although choosing a design and fit out company comes at a premium, utilising a company with experience streamlines the process. Knowing the ins and outs of regulations simplified the progression from idea to opening the door for our first patient.”

“Levitch allowed us to concentrate on work without having to take time off to micromanage the build. With no experience in design or practice fit out, the learning curve was steep, but Levitch were there to help navigate the process.”

5-Star Recommendation

11/15/2018

Picture
Picture
Trust becomes a tangible asset when garnering expert opinion and recommendations that would influence one’s long-term investments. For Dr Bernadette Kwee, her trust in John Szymek, formed through years of engaging the latter’s expertise in equipment installation and maintenance, has been richly rewarded with a smooth surgery set up, great equipment buys and a stellar team that made it possible.

By Danny Chan

In August 2017, Dr Kwee sold her flourishing 7-year-old practice in Earlwood – one that she had painstakingly built from scratch – to concentrate on her family business. For the sake of expanding the export and vineyard business alongside her husband, she had to forgo a lucrative practice, not to mention, her love of treating cosmetic patients and seeing the glow on their faces following a smile makeover. Thankfully, she didn’t allow her well-honed clinical skills, business knowhow and contacts accumulated over the years to go to waste.

Dr Kwee recently set up Southern Smiles, a new practice in Miranda that serves the southern suburban communities of Sydney. For advice on what equipment to buy, she turned to her former practice contact. The dentist’s unwavering trust in John’s “work and judgement” from the Earlwood days paid off in the form of a go-to equipment supplier he recommended – Ampac Dental.

The NSW-based dental reseller ended up supplying the bulk of new equipment for the Miranda clinic, including: Swident Partner dental unit; OPG (Trident 2D Pan); X-ray (Trident RIX 70 DC); Phosphor Plate (Trident Reader); Suction Motor (Dmega); and Compressor (Nardi).

Not only did Bernadette retain John’s services as the lead engineer for installation and maintenance work, she found equally competent equipment specialists in Moe and Elizabeth from the Ampac Dental team. Commenting on the team’s high work rate and professionalism, the General Dentist opines:

“Ampac Dental were very accommodating in regards to choice of equipment and meeting my budget. They went above and beyond with their services, which includes allowing me to trial their smaller equipment (e.g. curing light) to see which one I preferred.”

“They were quick to order spare parts (that were accidentally thrown out by the cleaning staff) as any delays could have resulted in expensive downtime.”

The equipment did not disappoint either. The Swident Partner dental chair, in particular, drew positive feedback from patients and staff alike. Adding her own feedback, Dr Kwee remarks:

“The chair ergonomics – from different positioning modes to back support to the continental delivery – have been exceptional. I’ve used the traditional delivery unit in the past and found that it gave me a sore back and neck after prolonged use. I’ve not felt any operator strain thus far from using this unit.”

Apart from compact footprint and clean-line aesthetics, the dentist believes that when it comes to appraising a dental unit, patient comfort and connectivity are key attributes – all of which the Swident Partner delivers. She singles out the memory foam used in the chair upholstery – that conforms to the patient giving “extra comfort” – as well as the ease with which she mounted a screen to the chair to view images from the intra-oral camera as great features.

The Swident Partner also holds up to scrutiny from a technician’s point of view, as John concurs:

“The Swident dental unit is a very well presented piece of equipment – simple and very reliable. In terms of ergonomics, it’s very elegantly made and supported by a robust steel construction.”

Outstanding features, he notes, include: Delivery head (where all instruments are attached) with a module style distribution centre – where every instrument has an individual set of adjustment keys; slim and easy-to-access spitoon or cuspidor; manual and automatic positions, operational from the dentist's and assistant's side as well as foot control; and simple design – “a single main pc board on the chair and two very simple secondary electronic boards to complete the management of the whole equipment.”

According to the Service Engineer with over 40 years of dental industry experience, precise location of units and space utilisation were key considerations when installing the chair, OPG and X-ray units.

The installation, he explains, was done on a planned agenda, including a visit to site while under construction to give a definite location to the chair. Working with a concrete floor and a parking facility underneath, all services were plumbed from under the floor via a "core hole" – a 160mm hole in the concrete slab.

“This involves precise measurements and skilled execution. Everything else is built around the final location of the chair.”

The result is an optimally positioned chair that allows operator and assistant ample maneuvering space yet within easy reach to surrounding instruments and materials.

“Every surgery has to be carefully designed to achieve the most comfortable environment,” John stresses.

With her two-chair surgery fitted out with equipment that she says “lift the appearance of the practice and create a luxurious atmosphere”, Dr Kwee has John Szymek to thank, both for his expertise and strong endorsement of Ampac Dental.

“Together they make a great team,” she concludes, “one that truly goes above and beyond to ensure everything runs smoothly for you. And they also recommend very reliable equipment!”

Dentistry on Wheels

Dr Jalal Khan | The Dental Truck
Dr Jalal Khan | The Dental TruckDr Jalal Khan
A converted truck and heart for rural townships led Dr Jalal Khan outside his comfort zone

By Danny Chan

When dentists are asked to think out of the box, the usual ideas pop up: Email marketing, Internet marketing, E-referral campaigns, etc. Less humdrum ones go like this: Send festive cards to patients, install Expresso machine at waiting area, incorporate laser dentistry, etc.

By comparison, Dr Jalal Khan’s moment of epiphany truly went beyond the boxed confines of a typical dental surgery. He decided to purchase a fully kitted out mobile clinic from a retiring dentist, so that he could “bring dentistry out to parts of Australia that receive little attention from the dental profession”.

About 18 months ago, the Practice Principal of The Dental Station officially launched the mobile chapter of his then 3-year-old North Sydney practice. The Dental Truck opened for business in Outback Australia – or more specifically, Quilpie, a small town in South-west Queensland with a population of 595.

Quilpie is also the “mobile headquarters” where the truck is stationed and from where it drives into other remote towns that Dr Khan has designated as regular stops: Cunnamulla (population: 1,140); Thargomindah (population: 270); Windorah (population: 158) and Bourke (population: 1,824). The towns were specifically picked for not having access to a local dentist, Dr Khan intones: “That restricts us to very small rural and remote towns which is fine by me.”

The greater motivation was to go to places stuck at the meager end of Australia’s unevenly distributed healthcare services, which he contends, is a festering problem wrought by limited State and Federal funding as well as lack of resources.

“Prior to The Dental Truck, people in these towns had to travel 3-4 hours just to get to the nearest dentist. The economic costs of seeing a dentist for them was really exorbitant in both time and financial costs – in most cases, we’re talking drought-stricken farmers with limited resources to begin with.”

“As a result, they tend to put off dental visits. We regularly see patients who haven’t been to a dentist in 10,15 years – many with severe ailments.”

And it’s not just dental services these rural towns lack, Dr Khan reminds us, but many basic services metro dwellers take for granted simply do not make it to the Outback.

Meanwhile, Dr Khan’s efforts reaching out to Queensland health authorities – outlining the seriousness of the situation while requesting for funding support or collaboration – have been thwarted with numerous difficulties. What he has encountered is bureaucracy, buck passing and hoop-jumping administrative tasks.

His frustration was palpable: “It was a pain simply requesting to deliver public health vouchers on behalf of the government. The lack of support to do such things is crazy.”

While Dr Khan has drastically reduced travelling time for his patients’ dental visits, his own traveling time to the office has increased exponentially. Quilpie is a good 13- to 14-hour drive inland, although through connecting flights and land travel, the itinerant dentist has managed to reduce it down to a more manageable 8 hours.

The logistical costs also add up. Flight, accommodation and meals for the dental team, in addition to parking and truck transfer fees run in the thousands. “All these expenditure even before you get to a single patient.”

Sustaining Dr Khan through the pressures of maintaining a new start-up is a supportive family – he is married with a 2-year-old son – and renewed sense of vocation.

“I wanted to move out of the comfort zone and challenge myself clinically with a great community initiative,” he recalls his original motivations, “I couldn’t have done it without the support of my wife.”

What was initially a giddy mix of adventurism and quixotic notions of mobile dentistry has given way to weightier considerations.

“Seeing first hand the deterioration of the dental situation in these towns has made me more keenly aware of my role, first and foremost, as a healthcare provider,” the 31-year-old contemplates. “In many ways, The Dental Truck has evolved into a Public Health initiative.”

Although The Dental Truck remains a commercial enterprise – running two mobile teams that serve four towns – Dr Khan says he has received private donations and other forms of assistance.

“We do not charge exorbitant fees so we depend entirely on the locals to keep the business afloat.”

“Donations would help us to reduce the financial burden and carry on providing the much needed service. Dental volunteers, or those willing to work for less-than-market rates, are more than welcomed. With more people on board, we can bring the service to more towns.”

Asked for how he would convince others to move outside their comfort zones to serve in rural locations, Dr Khan shares: “For me, the reward is getting to see a part of Australia you don’t often see and meeting people you don’t normally meet.”

As for advice that he would give fellow dentists who feel stuck in a 9-to-5 job, Dr Khan says thoughtfully:

“Do not get bogged down by the commercial side of things or lose sight of your main role as healthcare providers.”

“Be willing to take risks, reinvent yourself in today’s very competitive environment and think outside the box!”

Levitch Design Australia showcases urban elegance in Melbourne CBD practice

By Danny Chan

When you make a living from designing and beautifying your client’s smiles, surely you would want your dental surgery to reflect the aesthetic nature of your work. That was what Dr Chris Dimos had in mind when building his new downtown surgery.

Although Dr Dimos had the idea to update the look and feel of his practice about three years ago, he was then too busy developing the “dento-facial aesthetics” side of his practice. Nevertheless, he met up with several prominent dental fit out companies at an ADX dental exhibition. Even at the time, Dr Dimos had set his sights on a possible relocation, hence required a fit out company that had the experience of building a dental surgery from the ground up. The company that clearly stood out was Levitch Design Australia, one of the leading names in specialised healthcare design and construction.

“I’ve heard of Levitch as they had renovated rooms for other dentists and specialists that I know. They were also known in the business for taking a project all the way from site location to pre-design to final construction.”

Although it would be another 3 years before construction work commenced, Dr Dimos was already benefiting from the professional guidance of the LDA team.

“They were there with me before I had even found our new premises, throughout the lease negotiations, design and fit out process and they are still here supporting me 6 months down the track with anything that I need.”

The Practice Principal’s main brief to Levitch Design Australia was to give the new clinic a “spa-feel” that reflects the cosmetic-driven services. Upon realising that Dimos Dental’s address sits on the corner of Collins Street and Queen Street in the Melbourne CBD, namely the Mecca of Australia’s Style Capital, you would be forgiven for thinking the dentist’s goal sounds a tad modest. Yet when you walk into the new surgery for the first time, any notion of a modest fit out quickly evaporates.

Instead, you would be struck by how appropriately the trendy and luxuriant interiors match its hallowed locality. Whether in terms of style, modernity or grandeur, the purpose built clinic radiates all the chic qualities you’d associate with two of the most iconic streets in the character-filled CBD.

Located at level 7 of the 20-storey ICBC building on 379 Collins Street, Dimos Dental is perched high enough to offer its occupants magnificent city views. The pomp and splendour of the streets below and glossy veneer of high-rise neighbours add an interesting vibe to the charming interiors. It is the perfect oasis from which to peek out into the concrete jungle, enjoying its vim and verve from a cosy distance. Here, Levitch designers more than do justice to the clinic’s vantage position – they practically co-opted it.

The waiting area is a classic example. Seated in the leather couch facing a wall-insert plasma TV, with an ottoman and two plush chairs arranged on either side in a squarish, carpeted room, it’s easy to imagine yourself lounging in a 5-star luxury apartment. Relaxing to piped-in soft music under a unique timber-grilled tray ceiling with hidden luminaires, the illusion is complete as you look out of an adjacent window into the sprawling cityscape.

The Hilton-like experience extends into a cosy corner where waiting patrons get to enjoy a fresh brew in a quiet spot, thanks to quality soundproofing that keeps high-pitched whirrs and low rumbles at bay. Modish chairs and a coffee table sit loosely in a circle, zoned by a custom rug that lie flushed level with the solid timber flooring. It is a stylish yet not-too-laidback setting for urbanites to get their caffeine fix.

The front desk area is clearly where the designers took the boldest gambles – that paid off handsomely. The adventurous mix of textures and avant-garde designs could easily have backfired in the hands of less talented individuals. From the faux cracked marble reception console to the fabric feature wall adorned with a back-lit gold plated logo, this typically uneasy ensemble looks surprisingly posh and artsy – nary a whiff of ostentation.

Behind partially frosted glass doors, each room is well appointed with ample space for operators, assistants as well as the patient’s accompanying family members. The high-end clinical equipment are presented differently according to the treatment zone. In the dentist’s rooms, the design is decidedly pared down, with white walls and neutral-coloured fixtures, to accentuate the natural light-filled environment.

Over at the Facial Aesthetics room, a spa-like ambience is created through the combination of dark-coloured cabinetry, walls and mood lighting. Meanwhile, the baby blue chair upholstery teamed with baby pink swivel chair and bright yellow strip lighting brings out the subtle youthful messaging often aligned with facial aesthetic goals.

The five surgeries – two occupied by Dentists; two by Oral Health Therapists and one designated for Facial Aesthetics – are equipped with an array of sophisticated wares. Each of the dentist and OHT rooms are fitted out with Sirona Teneo and Intego Pro chairs, paired with integrated intra-oral cameras and Sirona Heliodent plus digital radiography, in addition to a shared KaVo Diagnocam. The Facial Aesthetics room houses a FOTONA Lightwalker Laser, Hydrafacial Unit, Dermastamp Unit and a VISIA skin and complexion analysis device.

The technology does not end at the surgeries. In an annex room, the portable equipment are neatly arranged to optimise access and storage space. The CEREC cart, diode laser, Zoom Light, Endo Trolley, Ortho Trolley and other dental gear occupy their designated spots without obstructing the workflow or blocking access to neighbouring equipment. As the centrepiece hardware, the Sirona Orthophos SL imbues the hi-tech imagery within generous space reserved for convenient 2D and 3D CBCT imaging services.

More patient convenience, thanks to the provision of single-visit cosmetic restorations, is highlighted by the CEREC MC XL mill and Ivoclar Progromat furnace. The in-house lab also features Scheu ministar vacuum form unit, model trimmer, electric motor and other lab equipment. The plant room houses the Cattani Tandem Turbo-smart suction units and the Cattani AC400Q compressor.

Obviously, the dental-specific knowledge of the builder played a key role in the overall construction and surgery set up, from layout and space utilisation to piping and installation.

“I was surprised at how much knowledge (the LDA building team) had with regards to the actual day-to-day running of a dental practice and the workflow, etc. They had some great ideas that I hadn’t considered,” Dr Dimos remarks.

“We established a great working relationship. Their project management of the job allowed us to complete the project on time in a very tight time frame.”

Faced with unforeseen challenges – some of which were thrown up by the new landlord – the LDA team, with input from Dr Dimos, project managed the construction flawlessly and delivered within just four months. Due to their customer-oriented approach, Dr Dimos was able to develop his business alongside a renovation project that was three years in the making.

“They provided exceptional service even before we had found our new premises. They would come and inspect potential sites with me, offer opinion and even mock-up quick designs to see if the premises fitted with my vision of what we hoped to achieve.”

“Their work ethic is matched only by the actual construction. The final result truly combines great aesthetics with great functionality. I would recommend their services in a heartbeat!”

Busy dentist found the perfect “auto pilot” team to renovate his practice

By Danny Chan

When the shopping centre that houses his dental practice underwent major redevelopment about two years ago, Dr Karan S Baran saw an opportunity to expand his two-chair clinic. The revamp of Warriewood Square, a shopping centre located in the Northern Beaches region of Sydney, meant that new space was being made available to existing tenants, and the astute dentist jumped on the chance to do some redeveloping of his own.

With additional square footage, the owner of United Dental Clinic wanted to increase the number of surgeries at his suburban practice and make room for an in-house CBCT unit. These were necessary changes to accommodate the increasing demand and influx of new patients. At the same time, Dr Baran wanted to modernize UDC’s look and feel, create a more efficient workflow and incorporate an open-concept sterilization zone.

The dentist already had a fit out firm in mind for the job – healthcare design and construction specialist, Levitch Design Australia. In fact, it was a decision he made years before even starting his own practice.

Dr Baran was so impressed by the renovation works the team at Levitch Design Australia had done for a former employer and a friend’s clinic, that by the time it came for his own clinic’s makeover, his mind was made up.

“I worked at a practice on the central coast that was designed by them. They also designed and built my friend’s practice in Queensland. I loved everything that they did for these clinics and I made up my mind that if I ever decided to have my own practice, I would use their services.”

It wasn’t just the beautiful designs or efficient layouts that convinced the Practice Principal. Dr Baran knew that he needed a team that could work autonomously, and that includes managing all liaisons with the council and shopping mall management.

“As a company specialising in healthcare design and construction, I knew Levitch Design had tons of direct experience working on establishments very similar to mine, so I went into this project feeling confident that they could work with minimum input from me.”

“As it turned out, the shopping centre’s design team wanted to be involved in every aspect of the design, from colour scheme to the entire look of the place. The design team at Levitch Design dealt with the shopping centre management throughout the building process so that I did not need to get involved at all. To me, this was a big blessing as I was running a busy practice and could not afford to give any time to attend the frequent meetings required to iron out the nitty gritty aspects.”

It wouldn’t be surprising if the design team at Warriewood Square had been a little pedantic about maintaining a consistent look and feel in keeping with the centre’s stylish $84 million makeover. And if the look they were going for was “elegant chic with a touch of modernity”, then the revamped United Dental Clinic was perfectly dressed for the party.

As soon as you step into the clinic, an impression quickly gets formed, that of a modern, professional and customer-oriented practice. These positive attributes are conveyed through the contemporary flair of the design, urban decor and lighting as well as a clever mix of colours.

If there were ever future-proof colours that exude unassuming charm and contemporary sophistication, it must be the combination of ash grey and bluish tones that were used to sublime effect here. The grey walls provide the solid background colour while scattered blue tones in objects and fixtures add visual interest.

The most eye-catching blue object at the front desk area is the logo’s central motif, a cyan streak that depicts a reclining patient. The backlit logo emblazoned across the grey wall behind the reception counter sets the colour theme for the entire waiting room: Grey rug with bright blue lines, grey and blue chairs, TV area with grey wall and blue-top floral display table.

The rug, which demarcates the waiting zone, cleverly contrasts, both in tone and texture, with the “back wall” of tinted glass windows. Subtle hints of modernity may be inferred from the front counter design – stark black lines that separate neutral-coloured panels – as well as hexagonally shaped ottomans. A hanging lamp adds an orange glow of warmth to the front desk, conveying a welcoming atmosphere for interaction between receptionist and patients.

Beyond the beauty and ambience, the design team’s experience also shone in the layout. Shopping centre shop units are not exactly known for their generous size or proportionate dimensions, so space limitations can be very challenging. Thankfully, LDA made optimal use of the elongated 103-sqm floorplan. Each operatory has a neatly apportioned space with smart considerations for window placements, wall-hugging cabinetry and lighting. “The team considered all the important elements that make up an ergonomic workspace for efficient workflows,” Dr Baran commends.

The dentist is most pleased with the design and execution of the open steri area, not least because of the challenges involved. In keeping with its QIP (Quality Innovation Performance) credentials, the steri area design needed to conform to stringent guidelines for sterilization and disinfection as set out by the general practice accreditation provider.

“Once again, the healthcare-specific experience of Levitch Design proved to be immensely beneficial, if not critical. The steri area looks as good as it is functional and ergonomic.”

Levitch Design did much more than just tick boxes, Dr Baran says, but went out of their way to make sure everything progressed smoothly. He singled out lead designer, Dharmi Vora for praise.

“Dharmi is very experienced and made the whole process very enjoyable. We had the freedom to choose whatever we wanted and then Dharmi would also put forth her expert recommendations.”

Whether it was Dharmi’s work ethic, the tradies’ workmanship or the design team’s effective communication skills, Dr Baran is grateful that they all translated to a hassle-free customer experience – understandably, the recurring plaudit of a busy dentist.

“The project was finished on time and I WAS ALWAYS (emphasis Dr Baran’s) kept informed about the progress. From a business point of view, it is comforting to know that you are entrusting the entire construction to a capable team so that you can focus on your own work.”

Time is money, and the savings do add up considerably. Although he declined to reveal the renovation costs, Dr Baran says the money was more than well spent:

“They are not the cheapest but it’s an investment and I will do it again.”
